BIO
Ryan Calhoun grew up in Southern California and New York, in a large musical family. His older siblings subjected him to a steady diet Def Leppard, Prince and Pearl Jam as well as all the best powerpop of the 80's & 90's from the moment of birth. He was particularly fond of Foo Fighters “Colour and The Shape”.
At age 11 he started playing guitar. He wanted to be both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The endless Top40 upbringing however found its way into his fledgling songwriting and his sound quickly became unapologetically pop. Eschewing grunge, young Ryan was fascinated by the craft of the pop song and he would frequently be compared to Lifehouse, Goo Goo Dolls and Dashboard Confessional.
Ryan's latest album, "Everything That I’m Not" (produced by Bill Lefler - Plain White Ts, Gym Class Heroes, LowVsDiamond) is a culmination of this musical journey. Sweet heartstring ballads and sing-along anthems that recall Cheap Trick or Matchbox Twenty, the songs have found their way into numerous TV shows including One Tree Hill, Make It Or Break It, Dancing With The Stars, Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant, Cougar Town and various Kardashian shows...
Along the way, and despite the accessibility of his music, Ryan's songwriting and talent established him as one of the most promising young artists emerging from the Hotel Café scene in Los Angeles. Although synonymous with angsty girl singer/ songwriters and folk/rock troubadours, the scene embraced Ryan on the pure talent of his writing. Furthermore, his songs “Who We Are” and "This Is Your Life charted #1 and #3 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart and the LP also featured in the Top 10. A couple of million listens on myspace and 30,000+ singles sold is testament to the simple power of a great song and a great voice.
Ryan is currently touring and working on songs for his next record.
